Applied Social Sciences Forum Activities
1) Arab Consortium for PHD Documentation
The idea of creating an Arab Consortium for the documentation of dissertations and theses in Social Sciences “Almajmaa” is without doubt the fruit of a long debate and research that was conducted by the ASSF in collaboration with Ford Foundation’s Cairo office.
This project seeks to find a suitable and public source to document dissertations and theses. The idea came to the fore in response to a number of problems, and adding to the “democratization” of higher education in the Arab countries, and to the quantitative expansion of knowledge. In fact, this project emanated from a group of university professors and researchers who believe that knowledge is a public good.
2) Political Confidence Barometer
Following the revolution, social accountability has become a way to achieve good governance and develop public participation in improving service provision. This has become the Forum’s most important priorities. It conducted three waves of political opinion polls every year. Each poll targeted a representative sample of 2,300 respondents.
The purpose of this survey is to identify the emerging active political and civic parties. It also seeks to measure the level of popularity of the political leaders, the voting intentions, and citizen’s satisfaction levels.
3) Local Governance Barometer (LGB)
The ASSF launched the local governance Barometer whose aim was to measure the level of good governance and the quality of public services at local and national levels, in a participatory, quantitative, and proportional way. Additionally, it is designed to understand one aspect of good governance, and assist the local organizations in improving their public services and in responding effectively to citizens ’needs.
The ASSF has been seeking, since 2011, to promote public awareness of the social policies through spreading the culture of “voice” within the rationalization of local government. This has been conducted using instruments as a social Barometer, national encounters, documentaries as well as the media that is working to provide quantitative measures and continuous capacity building and planning based on local administration quality and public services efficiency.
4) Research Teams and Studies
Since its inception, the ASSF has been seeking to help young researchers in the Arab world to bridge the gap between Social Sciences competencies and the labor market. It aims to have an impact on the political discussions and improve the quality of scientific research among new generations of researchers in the context of a new democratic phase. It strives to reach this through direct applications, and through its role as a research institution. The ASSF tries to resolve concrete social problems and help reform initiatives, inform public opinion, and influence legislation and institutions’ change. The forum seeks to become a source of information and knowledge and encourage researchers in different Arab countries. It looks forward to support networking between researchers and institutions. This would not have been achieved without the help of its partners in the project.
